Drainage Basins In Australia
A drainage basin forms part of a water cycle, but in which is open. Australia is divided into twelve drainage basins, which are subdivided into seventy seven water regions. These water regions can be subdivided into two hundred and forty five river basins.
Australian Drainage Basins:
Drainage Basins Information:
A drainage basin is an area of land drained by a main river.
Inputs: Where water enters the system through rain.
Outputs: This is where water is lost through either rivers carrying into the sea or by evaporation.
Stores: Places where the water is held, such as pools or lakes.
Flows: This is the process where water flows through the system.
Watershed: A ridge of high land dividing two drainage basin areas that are drained by different water systems. The density of watershed is measured by: The total length of the streams in the drainage basins/the total area of the drainage basin.
Tributaries: Are small channels in a drainage basin that helps drain the area of land.
Floodplain: A wide flat valley floor of a river where the fine sand is deposited during times of flooding.
River Mouth: Is the place at which the water is directed into the main river of the drainage basin.
