Types Of Fauna
Mammal - Sugar Gliders are part of the marsupial infraclass of mammal, they are small possum like animals who have wings and can glide for very long distances under the jungle canopy. They eat nuts, flowers and some leaves. They live in tropical and temperate forests all along the east coast of Australia.
Reptile - Goannas are large reptilian lizards who have long claws and snake like skin. They are carnivorous scavengers who also eat eggs. and live mainly in arid and semi-arid areas.
Amphibian - Corroboree frogs are critically endangered frogs that live in the snowy mountain region of New South Wales. Their skin is black and covered with yellow lines, they are the one of the only frogs that produce their own poison as opposed to obtaining it through diet.
Bird - Wedgetail eagles are native to Australia and southern Papua New Guinea. It’s a very large bird with a wingspan of up to 2.27m, it is predominantly brown with some black feathered markings, the younger the bird the lighter the brown.
Invertebrate - Sydney funnel-web spiders are native to Australia and are usually found within 100km of Sydney. They are black and make webs which are like hollow funnels, their bite is among one of the most deadly in the world due to the poison they inject. if you are bitten you will most likely die within 15 minutes without medical attention.
Endangered species - The Tasmanian Devil is native to Tasmania and is a small canine animal with black fur and a white marking on their chest (16% have no marking). They are carnivores scavengers who are nocturnal hunters. The Tasmanian Devil population has been decimated by a communicable facial tumor disease that kills within months by preventing feeding.
State emblem - The state emblem of New South Wales is the platypus, a monotreme (mammal that lays eggs) that is native to Australia. It is egg-laying, venomous, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed and chicken spurred and is one of the strangest animals on the planet. It sniffs around in the mud of creeks and streams searching for insects and small fish.
